    Nice to hear the 256 Newton mentioned. He was quite a guy. The other thing he designed for Savage was the 250 Savage, i am pretty sure. Named the 250-3000 because it was the first mass commercial cartridge to achieve 3000 fps (but only with an 87 gr bullet). See, marketing hype is nothing new. I enjoy learning about vintage cartridges that in many cases were ahead of their time. The 280 Ross comes to mind in the same breath as the 256. I love the 8x57. Mine is the M48 Yugo Mauser. Got it in 2002 or 2003 i think, for 175. Very good condition, nice stock. I actually had that some years before i got an -06. Felt vaguely un-American. Lol. But i did already have 2 308's, a 30-30, and other stuff, so i was okay. Hard to beat, esp if u handload to its normal potential. Most factory ammo is downloaded in deference to old rifles and the . 318 bores that are still around. There is about half a thimble full of difference between it and -06 if you look at loading manuals. It is about as ubiquitous in Europe as the -06 is here. It always surprised me how many other countries used it as a military cartridge right after WW2, even in semiautos like the Hakim. I would think everybody would want to forget anything German. I guess that goes to show how good a cartridge it is. The only domestic rifle i can think of ever chambered for it is the Rem 700 Classic, only for 1 year of course. Wouldn't mind having one in any number of chamberings. The 6.5x55 would be nice (circa 1993, i think), so it could also be loaded to full ballistics. The lengthened 41 Mag is an interesting idea, similar to the 444 Marlin. Probably never happen, since we have the 444 and the 45-70. But it would be fun. Bullets up to 250 gr at good velocity. A friend of mine picked up a 6.5-06 a few months ago that has "ACKLEY" stamped on it. Not sure if Ackley built the rifle, or if it is an AI chamber. Don't think he has done any load development yet. Should be a good shooter though. Only wildcat i have is a 357 Herrett barrel for my Contender. Haven't done anything with it yet, but i plan some silhouette. I may get my 22 Hornet barrel reamed to K-Hornet at some point. Another wildcat that is interesting is 6.5 JDJ. Can't think of any wildcats in repeaters that i might want, but who knows. That is half the fun.

    The 30-30 is older and still going strong. The 30-06 is close in popularity and there's more that chambers it, so both won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

    I hit my 1st milkjug at 1 mile with a 338 LM. the rifle had a fast for caliber 1:8 twist with straight bartlein barrel.. it was great... but I sold it and got a custom 6.5 CM (28" straight kieger 1:7) I did this for less concussion, cost, and recoil. I don't hunt and I recognize most of your audience are hunters, so my info doesn't speak to 6.5 CM hunter fan bois... but hell, for lower recoil, lower concussion, higher precision... yup, I'm 6.5 CM fan boi

    Using the 7x57 for big game hunting in Africa was very common. The Boer hunters used the 7x57 in Angola for elephant before Bell did, but Bell brought attention to it. The "elephant in the room" also has a say... so does Corbett's tiger. Everybody reloads today and the (so-called) "low pressure" factory ammo should be perceived as reduced recoil loads. You get to see the shot and the animal's reaction through the scope. Besides, "low pressure" factory ammunition was the only ammunition that was used by Boer, Bell and Corbett anyways... Thank you for keeping on mentioning the 7mm's...

    Hunting deer with .223 and 22-.250 is unethical. 90% of shooters don't shoot well enough to ethically use those rounds at distance. Can you use it? Sure. Should you use it? No. Not when there are literally dozens of readily available rounds that will ethically do the job even when the shooter's skills are marginal. Ron mentioned bow hunters as well. There is no telling how many wounded deer run off and die every season because Bubba can't shoot a bow to save his life.

    The Nosler partition is the gold standard. The bullet all others are compared to. The Barnes alloy TTSX, LRX are the new kids on the block. For a cheap, yet effective, hunting bullet, the Hornady interlocks are what a lot of us consider the "poor man's partition". There are many excellent bullets out there right now, but that is where I put my hard earned money.. What some guys don't understand, is you don't need a "controlled expansion" premium bullet, to kill a deer or elk. Most times the Hornady interlock will suffice.. and for the money, they are damn hard to beat.

    I was thinking 45-70 about 2 seconds before you said it. Great biology discussion. Spot on. If anyone cares (lol), the 308 and 338 Marlin Express cartridges came out in the early 2000's. It was a Hornady cartridge, and i think they invented the FTX bullet design specifically for them. Regular tubular magazine. The rifles were called the 336 XLR (long range, i think). Beefed up to handle higher pressures. I think the receivers were perceptibly larger. Nice stainless guns with laminated stocks. Barrels were longer than a typical lever action, 24 or 25" i think, for best ballistics. The 308 ME closely mirrored the 308 win 160 gr bullet i think), and the 338 probably mirrored the later 338 Federal, but I don't recall velocity. Not more than 2500 i think. The marketing points were better aerodynamics and flatter trajectory, and better velocity retention due to the more streamlined FTX bullet, and the soft tip was safe in a tubular mag. It was provably a good idea and a nice technical achievement, but it didn't have the broad appeal they hoped for. Too proprietary and specialized. Reloaders were linited to the FTX bullet if they wanted advantages of the cartridge. With FN bullets, the only advantage would be higher initial velocities, which would decrease more quickly due to wind drag. Guns have been discontinued for years, and i doubt Ruger will bring them back. I think Hornady still makes ammo, but probably in kimited quantities. It is almost as moribund as the 30 Remington AR. The spiral magazine gun was the Rem 14 and later 141. Designed by Pedersen i think. I think the main chambering was 35 Rem, but also available in 30 Rem i believe. Supposed to be a nice slide action woods gun. I think they stopped priduction before WW2, maybe during the Depression. Ackley's book is great. He was a true master. Hatcher's Notebook is excellent too. He explains the steel numbering system, has ballistics tables, and good factoids like the batch of brittle 03 Springfield receivers. Learned a bit about rifle manufacturing from him. Got both books from Midway so.e years ago. Time for a reread of each. You have great videos, Ron. I enjoy them. Thank you

    I am a big handgun hunter. I like going out with either my 357, 10mm, or 44 mag. However, I would say these all make poor defensive choices against a charging bear. I would say I am above average when it comes to shooting and I do not think I would be able to put an accurate shot to disable a bear. They make awesome hunting options when you have the chance to wait for the perfect shot but that is way different than making a shot on a charging bear. So with that being said, when I am out fly fishing out west, I pack bear spray even though I have what some would say "the perfect bear defense calibers". With the spray, I dont have to worry about shot placement as the spray pattern is pretty wide. It is also much lighter than any practical pistol you would bring with you. Finally, it is so much easier to pack due to the shape so it's always at the ready. Also, if it gets submerged while I am fly fishing, no harm no foul. Ron mentions it's hard to practice with because you have to buy a new bottle each time. A bottle is $40. So, the same cost as 20 rounds of buffalo bore ammo for the common bear calibers. I don't understand why you would have an unlimited budget to shoot bullets to practice with but with a bottle of spray that costs the same, its all the sudden too expensive to practice with? I guess that's the bias that comes out. Also with the spray, you only need to discharge a few cans to understand how it works and get an idea of the spray pattern. To master any of the handguns listed, it takes hundreds of rounds to master.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast
      @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast 15 часов назад

      Thanks Jeremy. I understand about the hard choices. Many elitists say we just need to stay out of bear habitat, but come on! Everywhere but downtown San Francisco is bear habitat -- and that used to be until anti-hunters filled it with concrete and people. While bear attacks remain rare, they are all too real when you or your family is one of the rare victims. So arming up is only sensible. Bear spray is a fine option that all the family can be trained to use, but variables like wind and charging bears pushing right through it suggest stronger defense. Based on research and interviews with people like Phil Shoemaker, it seems a heavy-for-caliber, hard bullet (flat nose for straight line penetration, too) is more important than pure power. The 357 Mag. and 10mm Auto seem like fine middle-ground options. Whatever you choose, best of luck in never needing to employ it.

    In this part of Montana, .30-06 is more popular than .308 Win. IMHO, .30-06 bolt rifles are set for a huge come back in regions where big game is hunted. Hornady's Superformance ammunition is an example of a modern powder behind a modern low drag/high B.C. bullet that turns the .30-06 into a light magnum as it shoots a 180 grainer upwards of 2,820fps out of a 24 inch barrel. I'll be using Remington 220 RN grain Corlokts for grizzily because this round can bust through brush whereas the .308 Win can not handle this bullet and cannot handle grizzly in the dense brush where one is most likely to surprise a bear.

    Its not ammo manufacturing... its the actual guns .. i love savage.. but they screwed the pooch on the B-mag.. i had one and hated the bolt system.. i was trying to find just a single shot.. only one i could find was 1885 low wall... cool gun.. but im not paying 1400 bucks for a single shot..

      Boy, was that original B-Mag a disaster. I had 5 assignments to review and write it up and had to cancel all because the rifle was truly a piece of junk. Lousy accuracy and sometimes the bolt would come out of the action on the backstroke. The Ruger bolt action was solid, but accuracy wasn't quite up to snuff. The Browning/Winchester low wall single shot will shoot sub MOA if I do my part. I will pay $1400 for a well built, accurate single shot.

      @RonSpomerOutdoors-Podcast , yeah the problem I had with the b-mag was... you could close your bolt handle before you got it into battery.. it was straight up junk.. I got rid of it

    It’s funny seeing how many people get outraged at the title and hammer out their angry response without watching a single second of the video.
